Thanksgiving Holiday Outreach
Free hot meal served by The Bridge of Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas—The season of giving is here and The Bridge of Lubbock is participating with their annual Feed the Mind Thanksgiving Lunch on Monday, November 21, 2011.

Feed the Mind is offered three times a week to homeless and low-income families but on Monday, families will experience a family atmosphere filled with Christ’s love.  Seasoned with Love, The Bridge’s catering service, will prepare a traditional feast and volunteers from Health and Safety Solutions, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lubbock Legal Professionals and other individuals from the community will provide the warmth.

This year, The Bridge of Lubbock received many canned goods from Family Life Radio’s Concert for a Cause featuring Todd Agnew.  This spurred additional canned drive donations from the Texas Tech Women’s Basketball Team, the Northwest Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and Escape Paintball. All canned goods will be used to create care packages for families who attend the lunch.  Other contributions were received from the Hispanic Association of Women and Soldiers of God Ministries.

Volunteers who have contacted The Bridge of Lubbock indicate that they want to do more than just donate; they want to serve and give their time. Ashlei Watson, Outreach Coordinator says, “I am thrilled about the support that we are receiving from the community. The Lubbock community has a heart to serve and make this city a better place. We are thankful for the donations and time given to help us feed homeless and low-income families.”

If you are interested in serving on Monday, contact Ashlei Watson at awatson@bridgeoflubbock.org, call (806) 687-0772 or simply arrive at 9:30 am at 1301 E Redbud Avenue.  Save the date:  December 19, 2011  Christmas Lunch at The Bridge.

The Bridge of Lubbock is a Christian non-profit organization serving families around the east Lubbock community by offering Bridge 2 Success, a mentoring program for students in grades 6-12 as an after-school program during the school year and sports camp during the month of July. Other outreach programs include a free lunch offered three times weekly and a free clothing closet twice monthly to homeless and low-income families.

Other outreach programs include a free lunch offered three times weekly and a free clothing closet twice monthly to homeless and low-income families.

“We felt The Bridge of Lubbock was a perfect organization to kick off our Concert for a Cause,” said Kerri Schoonvelt of Family Life Radio, “their involvement in serving the community in need is so diverse.  They serve at-risk students and their families. They provide clothing and food.  Most off all volunteers are the heart of their outreach and we want to help more people get connected to The Bridge.”

The festivities begin at 5:00 pm with a Bodyworks attraction in the parking lot.  The concert will begin at 6:00 pm with The Landon Scoggins Band opening for Todd Agnew.

The price of admission is two or more canned Thanksgiving meal items which will be used during The Bridge’s Thanksgiving outreach on November 21, 2011.  A love offering will also be collected to help the organization raise funds to continue their outreach.

Bridge 2 Success Summer Camp
Free Camp Presented by The Bridge of Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas-- Trying to plan your summer vacation? The Bridge of Lubbock will be hosting Bridge 2 Success Summer Camp Tuesday, July 5, 2011 through Friday, July, 29, 2011. This free day camp offered for at-risk youth is made possible in part because of The Helen Jones Foundation, Rebound Rehab Contractors, Bodyworks and Whitewood Lanes.

Camp enrollment is scheduled for June 28, 2011 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at The Bridge of Lubbock (1301 Redbud Ave).  Due to limited funding, only 60 campers will be accepted and parent/guardian must be present.

Bridge 2 Success Summer Camp Director, Tommy Burkhead, said camp this year will be like no other. Campers will be attending a variety of field trips as well as gaining leadership skills by exploring different leadership styles from the Bible and from various members of the community. Opportunities to enhance skills will also be available through sports activities such as football, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer.

The goal of the summer camp, Burkhead said, is to enrich students with the knowledge of our Savior, to build a bond with the students and show them how much value they have in their community. Another goal of the camp is to enhance those values through the teaching and practices of leadership skills.

Burkhead wishes to encourage the students and utilize opportunities that The Bridge can give them while having fun.

“We always encourage community involvement,” Burkhead said. “We are trying to get community groups to sponsor various programs for the camp, whether it is to sponsor a meal, field trip or general supplies for the camp itself.”

According to Burkhead, Bridge 2 Success is an opportunity for young men and women to grow in their spiritual life as well as their future in high school, college, and the workforce.

“Our hope is to influence our campers and guide them on to a path of greatness,” Burkhead said.

The Bridge 2 Success program is an outreach of The Bridge of Lubbock. To learn more about Bridge 2 Success or to make donation call (806)687-0772 or visit our website, www.bridgeoflubbock.org.

Project Prom Wrap-Up
Young Ladies Successfully Clothed for Prom Night

More than 30 young ladies will be feeling beautiful on their special night, thanks to success of The Bridge of Lubbock’s Project: Prom.

Saturday, March 26, The Bridge of Lubbock opened up its doors as the young ladies lined the hallway anxiously awaiting their consultation appointment to be fitted and styled for their prom attire, which was all donated by the community.

“There are a lot of girls that don’t have the chance to get a dress, which means they can’t go to prom,” Meghan McBride said. “If there is someone here that is willing to help then that is awesome.”

Meghan is a junior at Roosevelt School. When asked how she was going to feel at her prom with a glowing smile she said she was going to feel amazing, she was going to feel like the queen there.

A freshman from Estacado High School, Kymara East, said everyone was so nice and she feels like a beauty queen when she is in her dress.

Tammie’s closet coordinator, Tammie Johnson, was there to help assist the girls find the dress of their dreams.

“I have tears coming from my eyes today,” Johnson said. “Just seeing all the parents here with their granddaughters or daughters, it’s just so overwhelming to see all the excitement that is going on today.”

Leigh Madewell, coordinator for Project Prom, wanted to thank all the supporters and donors from the community.

“Through your generosity we collected over 300 dresses and numerous pieces of accessories,” Madewell said. “Project: Prom was a great success and I feel like everyone here today was very blessed.”

“We know that prom is a very special day to many young women and we were happy to make this as special as possible for them.”

Young ladies will have another opportunity to find the dress and accessories of their dreams on April 2, 2011.

Call Tammie Johnson at 806-441-6527 or Leigh Madewell at 806-790-7518 to schedule a consultation appointment or stop by between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Lubbock organization hopes to make fairy tales come true with Project Prom
By Ann Wyatt Little -bio | email
Posted: Mar 04, 2011 4:38 PM CST

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  It is a night to shine and be beautiful, but going to prom can be pricey. That's why one local non-profit organization is working to make fairy tales come true. It's called Project Prom.

"We have long, short and sparkly. The whole nine yards," explains Tammie Johnson who sorts through donations. She runs Tammie's Closet at The Bridge of Lubbock and this year the agency is trying something new, prom dresses.

"I'm so excited," said Johnson. "It's every girls dream and that is what we want to do for them to have a dream." She plans on making dreams come true this spring.

"It's in line with our vision at The Bridge which is to restore hope," Executive Director Mayda Cruz said.

So many young ladies on the South Plains anxiously wait for prom, but getting ready for the night can add up quickly. "Really can my family afford a dress when trying to pay for light bill or eat? So here that doesn't need to be a stress," adds Cruz. Some of the dresses on the rack have never been worn. Proof? They still have price tags.

The project is about more than just a dress. "We all like to treat ourselves so we are working with the South Plains Academy to arrange for them to be on site to do hair and makeup," added Cruz.

Local businesses have offered to dry clean dresses and even alter them. The bridge hopes to help as many young ladies as they can with Project Prom, but to do so they need more dresses in all sizes and accessories.

Johnson plans to have everyone styling and knows fairy tales will come true.

"I'm like a fairy godmother. I hope to be throughout the years to come."

If you have gently worn dresses, shoes or accessories that might make a young woman's night The Bridge will come by your house and pick them up.

They are currently taking appointments to come by and pick a dress. They want it to be an experience for each young woman and her family.

Project Prom Organizers can be reached at The Bridge at 687-0772 or you can drop off your donations at 1301 Redbud Avenue.

The first day to pick out dresses is March 26th.
