12/14/10 Experience Life Church Gives Big to B2SOur final night of B2S for the Fall Semester started off with a brief presentation from Monica Wood and Deb West who shared information about a Youth Bowling League at Whitewood Lanes. All B2S students were invited to participate free of charge. Next, we were visited by Santa Claus who led the way to our special Christmas Celebration provided by members of Experience Life Church.
River Smith's provided the food while our students met the families who adopted them in order to make their Christmas extra special this season. What followed next, was just unbelievable. A Christian Rap Concert complete with fog and an amazing light show. Everyone was touched by the testimony of each rapper. It was an amazing evening!! We are blessed. 12/7/2010
Preston Mack, a student at Lubbock Christian University, joined us this week to talk to the kids about working hard and not giving up in life. Mack started Born Royal Basketball which will give low-income kids the chance to play competitive basketball at no cost to their families. Angel Vega led a devotional on forgiveness, then Live Oak Community Church provided pizza for us to enjoy while decorating our Christmas tree. Sarah Allen created some adorable snowman cupcakes for us, too!
11/30/2010With 3 weeks left to go in the Fall Semester, we reconvened from Thanksgiving Break with a lot of deep discussion on helping others. Two counselors from Catholic Family Services provided insights on the education that is required to become a professional counselor. Our Director of Communications, Toni Spray led a discussion about the Meaning of the Life of Jesus. When she asked "Has anyone seen Jesus in you today?" we learned that the students were able to see Jesus in others but could not share how they saw Jesus in themselves. This new awareness inspired them to think about every decision that they make. We closed the night with some yummy cheeseburgers donated by the First Baptist Church of Lubbock.

Reaching Out to Others
This Tuesday at B2S, we watched the movie To Save a Life. After the movie, mentors led discussions with the kids about how they can reach out to others in their schools to make a difference in someone else's life. To learn more about To Save a Life, read the plot summary below. After the discussions, we enjoyed a great pasta dish provided by the Soul Train Sunday school class at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church.
"Jake Taylor has everything. He has a beautiful girl, he's the champion in basketball, and everyone loves him. Then, an old childhood friend, whom Jake used to be friends with, commits suicide. Jake begins to think. He wonders what he could have done to save his friend's life. A youth minister tells him that Jake needs God. So Jake becomes a Christian. However, things begin to spin out of control. His dad is cheating on his mom, his girlfriend is pregnant, and his former friends ridicule and mock him. During all this, Jake is going to realize just what it means to be a Christian and how, to save a life." 11/09/2010
Learning From Experience
Angel Vega, one of our mentors, followed up last week's lesson on drugs and alcohol with stories of personal life experiences to show the kids how making one bad decision can lead to more bad decisions. Then, he told of how choosing to trust in God and letting others help you can lead to a brighter future. Brandon Hays led a devotional before we enjoyed an amazing baked potato bar provided by Victory Life Baptist Church.

Lola Coppage of Managed Care came to B2S to talk about the scary effects of tobacco, drug, and alcohol use. She brought REAL pig lungs so the kids and mentors could see exactly what smoking does to your lungs! Next, Ms. Lola had the kids try on beer goggles to show them how impaired having three drinks can make someone. Duke Underwood of The R.O.K. (one of our affiliates) led our devotion, and we topped the evening off with some salad and pizza provided by Jinna Norman and her friends.

What Are Those Kids Doing?!
Walking miniature horses and donkeys, of course! Minis and Friends of the South Plains visited B2S this week, bringing along three mini horses and two mini donkeys. The kids learned about how the minis are used for therapy and the basics of taking care of a mini. The students had a great time petting the minis and walking them around our lawn. Lauren Gilland, a B2S Intern and student at Texas Tech, led our devotional, and Jerry Ramirez coordinated an awesome barbecue dinner on behalf of First Baptist Church.

The kids found out how they related to each of six personality traits, and how those traits can be turned into a career. One of our mentors, Brandon Hays led a devotional on the importance of feeding yourself spiritually by reading the Bible. For Supper, we enjoyed turkey with gravy, corn on the cob, and potatoes prepared by our very own Seasoned With Love.

Minimum Wage or Lifestyle?Carol Morgan joined us this week to facilitate a discussion and exercise about the economic value of an education. After some careful thought and some simple math, it became quite clear to our students that $7.25 an hour would not come close to generating their dream lifestyle. Coleman Maxwell, an Intern at First Baptist Church of Lubbock, continued to expand the minds of our teens during the devotional as he explained that Jesus is the Bread of Life. We closed the night with a wonderful meal provided by Carino's Italian.
